Baking Conversions

Because of where I live I use degrees Celsius by default and I also prefer metric measurements making my scale a must have gadget rather than measuring cups.  Even though my battery warns me that it is running low I keep putting off replacing it until one day it dies during my baking and I end up resorting to measuring cups as an emergency backup.

I will say invest in a scale because cup measurements are not as accurate and differ even if you buy special measuring cups. If I weigh a cup of flour on my scale to convert to grams I get different results almost each time so I am never really sure how much a cup of flour really is.  I have noticed also that the types of flours can weigh differently on the scale even if they are both a cup full. The same type of flour can weigh differently as well when the cups have been bought in different shops.  Some cups can be smaller or bigger depending on where you buy them. This is the same for measuring spoons, one of ‘teaspoons’ has a 4 ml capacity yet a teaspoon is actually 5ml.

If you come across one of my recipes and it is not converted, go ahead and use the conversions below. This information is based on the All Recipes website baking conversions, which I use when I need to and to avoid confusion because different conversion websites seem to have differing results. Please be cautions when applying them to your own recipes, you might need to make a few adjustments because I find the volume to weight conversion a bit tricky.  The recipes on my site are all tried and tested so you should not have any problems unless you are like my sister!

Grams to cups measurements

Butter

If you know a cup of butter weighs 8 ounces, you could do the maths yourself:

1 ounce = 28.34 grams, so one cup of butter weighs 227 grams.

1/4 cup of butter = 57 g
1/3 cup of butter = 76 g
1/2 cup of butter = 113 g
