How to colour buttercream blue

Play Video

In this video tutorial I show you how to colour buttercream blue. I also show you how to colour some pin and purple. You can use any colours you like to colour your buttercream. To get best results, one needs to use the right colours, I prefer to use gel colours. I have tried liquid colours but the brands I used did not work well.

The first thing is to make the right buttercream, if making American buttercream beat the butter until white before adding any colours. Depending on the colours you use, you may end up with green buttercream when you are trying to colour it blue. Butter is yellow and yellow and blue make green.

Method to colour buttercream blue

Make the buttercream

Divide the buttercream into different bowls

Colour the buttercream using gel colours. The colours I use are below, you can buy a set of gel colours here, if you do not have them already.

Put the colours in clingfilm, you can pipe them on or spread with a spoon or knife. Wrap the clingfilm tightly to seal the buttercream.

Cut one end of the clingfilm, put the clingfilm in a piping bag fitted with a nozzle

Now it is ready to pipe onto cupcakes or cakes
