In this video tutorial I show you how to make breadsticks. They are crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. If you like your breadsticks crispier you bake them for longer.

Ingredients for breadsticks

300 grams bread flour

200ml- 225 ml water

20 ml vegetable oil

1 teaspoon salt

one 7 gram packet dried yeast

To decorate breadsticks

Oil or egg wash to brush on top (I used oil)

Sesame seeds and poppy seeds (optional)

Method for breadsticks

Add flour, salt and dried yeast in a bowl, mix together and then make a well in the centre.

Pour in the oil and water, you can add 200 ml first and mix, if it need more water, add more.

You need it to be a dough that is easy to shape and later. Some people do not like to handle a very wet dough so the less water you add the easier it is to handle.

Cover the dough with some clingfilm and leave to double in size. How long it takes depends on how warm the room is. The colder the room, the longer it takes.

While the dough is rising, prepare 3 baking trays with baking paper and place to the side. If you do not have three trays you van bake them in batches.

When the dough has risen gently punch it back into the bowl.

Flour your work surface and place the dough on it.

Pre-heat the oven to 200 Celsius

Stretch the dough with your hands or use a rolling pin to roll ,roughly, into a rectangle about 20cm x 36 cm.

Flour a pizza wheel and cut long strips of the dough. Then cut the strips in half or keep them long, if you want them long.

Gently lift one strip and twist the bread dough strips, place on the baking tray. Repeat the process until all the dough has been used up.

Brush some oil on top and sprinkle some seeds on top, if using

Bake in the oven for about 12 – 15 minutes depending how crispy you want them. If you want them very crispy you bake them for longer-

Remove from the oven and leave to cool completely before serving
