If this step is omitted crumbs will show up in the final layer of frosting which affects the overall look of the cake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process of keeping crumbs away from the outside of the cake is called crumb coating.  When cakes are baked and cooled, they need to be filled with frosting of . your choice which can be <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"buttercream (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/meadowbrown-trh1.wp1.site\/chocolate-swiss-meringue-buttercream\/\" target=\"_blank\">buttercream<\/a> and\/or another filling like<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" jam (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/meadowbrown-trh1.wp1.site\/how-to-make-strawberry-jam\/\" target=\"_blank\"> jam<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"curds (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/meadowbrown-trh1.wp1.site\/easy-lemon-curd-recipe\/\" target=\"_blank\">curds<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/meadowbrown-trh1.wp1.site\/white-chocolate-ganache-make-white-chocolate-ganache-cake\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"ganache  (opens in a new tab)\">ganache <\/a>et cetera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some cases you can use the same filling for crumb coating, for example, most <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"buttercreams (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/meadowbrown-trh1.wp1.site\/buttercream-icing-recipe-for-cake-decorating\/\" target=\"_blank\">buttercreams<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"ganache (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/meadowbrown-trh1.wp1.site\/easy-ganache-recipe-chocolate-ganache-glaze\/\" target=\"_blank\">ganache<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the cake is filled it is time to crumb coat.  A crumb coat is a thin layer of buttercream\/ganache that is used to seal in crumbs so that they do not attach to the final coat of icing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make the butter cream and spread some on the cake and cover the whole cake with a thin layer of icing.  You can use a spatula to smooth it out.  Put this in the fridge to firm up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When firm you can now put the final layer\/layers of frosting until it is as smooth as you want it to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to put <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"fondant (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/meadowbrown-trh1.wp1.site\/easy-fondant-icing-recipe-for-beginners\/\" target=\"_blank\">fondant<\/a> on top of the cake you chill the cake again and then you put fondant on top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In this video I am going to show you how to frost a cake without crumbs.
