Powdered Sugar Icing : Powdered sugar glaze

by Dec 21, 20170 comments

In this video tutorial I show you how to make this simple and quick powdered sugar icing or powdered sugar glaze. I use this icing for a lot of bakes because it is quick and effective. I like to add lemon juice to the powdered icing or icing sugar but you can use water to make a simple water icing and you can add vanilla extract too.

If you prefer, you can use any juice to water it down. After placing it on your bakes you can leave it to set a bit before packaging or serving. I sometimes add sprinkles onto my bakes, on top of the lemon icing and you do this when the icing is still wet to help the sprinkles stick on to the icing.

You can make this icing as thick or as runny as you want. The key is to add a little bit of liquid at a time because it does not take a lot to make it runny. The key is to add the liquid of your choice to the icing sugar and not the other way round.

Ingredients

  • 300 grams powdered icing / icing sugar (this can vary depending on what you want to cover and how thick it will be.)
  • juice of one lemon (depends on the size of the lemon), you may need more or less. or cold water
  • pinch of salt (optional)
  • food colouring (optional)

Method

  • Put the icing sugar in a bowl.
  • Squeeze in the lemon juice a bit at a time and stir well before adding more lemon juice. Mix until you get the consistency you want.
  • You can now use this to decorate cakes, cookies, sweet breads or whatever else you need the water icing for.
  • If you are adding sprinkles on your cakes, you can add them while the icing sugar is still well. If you wait for the powdered sugar icing to set the sprinkles will not stick on.
  • If you are going to colour the powder sugar icing, I recommend gel pastes and colour after you have the right consistency.
